WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL THERAPY?

Nutritional Therapy is rooted in medical science yet looks at the body in a holistic way. It works on the principle that every person is biochemically unique and has different nutritional requirements. It uses food therapeutically to encourage the body to heal naturally.

As our bodies and brains are made from molecules obtained from food, water and air, everything we eat has an effect on our wellbeing. If our body does not get the nutrition it needs, our health can suffer and illness ensues.

Although many people think they eat a balanced diet, how our food is digested and absorbed, increased intake of junk food, a decrease of nutrients in the soil, chemical farming methods, global pollution and high stress lifestyles are all thought to contribute to nutritional deficiencies. This is becoming increasingly widespread in Western populations.

Symptoms of illness and disease are often multifactorial. Healthy eating is increasingly gaining recognition as a firm anchor in determining our energy levels, longevity and state of mind and body.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A CONSULTATION

The initial consultation takes approx 1 - 1.5 hours where a thorough investigation of the clients medical history, current diet and lifestyle is taken and evaluated. Treatment involves an individualised dietary and lifestyle programme, using foods and specific nutrients appropriate to help the client achieve their optimal health, energy levels and feeling of wellbeing. Diagnostic tests to determine levels of nutrients, digestive function, hormones or possible food allergies may also be used.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN NUTRITIONAL THERAPY HELP?

Nutritional Therapy is suitable for everyone and is helpful for many chronic conditions including:

- Digestive disorders (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, IBS),

- Skin conditions

- Metabolic syndrome (weight gain/obesity, raised cholesterol, insulin resistance and high blood pressure)

- Hormonal imbalances (PCOS, infertility, endometriosis)

- Food allergies/sensitivities

- Respiratory disorders

- Migraine headaches

- Autoimmune disorders

- Fatigue

- Recurring thrush

- Stress

- and more . . . . .

ALLERGY TESTING

Amazingly one in three people are allergic/intolerant to something and about half of all allergies are food allergies. Food allergies and intolerances are on the increase and are the cause of many common symptoms including: bloating, headaches, mental fogginess, ibs, skin conditions, inflammation, hay fever, water retention, weight gain etc. Often anxiety, migraines, arthritis and other conditions can be exacerbated by food allergies. By finding out what you’re reacting to and to learn how to overcome allergies it is always worthwhile to have a non invasive allergy test.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN ALLERGY TESTING CONSULTATION?

Client is tested using a non invasive Vega testing machine. Over 100 different foods and environmental pollutants are tested. Details of the clients diet and lifestyle are assessed and client is given nutritional advice and goes away with a list of foods to avoid and recommendations and tips to implement to achieve better health. The Vega Allergy test is 98% accurate.

THE PRACTITIONER

Helen Ryan is a fully qualified Nutritional Therapist having studied at The Irish Institute of Nutrition and Health in Bray. She is a founder member of the Nutritional Therapists of Ireland (NTOI), the professional body representing Nutritional Therapists. After suffering with ill health for many years, Helen eventually learnt how a change in diet appropriate to her own biochemistry could have such a dramatic and positive effect on her own health. She believes passionately in what she does and is particularly interested in the areas of adrenal fatigue, allergies/food intolerance and the impact of stress on the digestive system.
